As part of the ICT’s efforts to attract more airlines to Costa Rica, British Airways has announced that it will offer direct flights to Costa Rica beginning in May of 2016.
As the first airline to fly nonstop between Gatwick and San Jose, British Airways will offer two flights weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the summer season and three times a week, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays during the winter season in the UK.
The ICT reports that Europe is the third largest market for tourism in Costa Rica, following North and Central America. In 2014 a total of 370,483 Europeans visited Costa Rica last year.
British Airways reports that it will use a Boeing 777 with capacity for 275 passengers, making Costa Rica their first destination in Central America. They will be the second airline to offer direct flights between Europe and Costa Rica. The other airline is Iberia, which offers daily flights between Madrid and San Jose.
