In April of this year Marina Pez Vela will host the world’s largest and most prestigious offshore sportfishing tournament for the second consecutive year. Known as the “Olympics of Sportfishing”, this year’s Offshore World Championship will be held in Quepos, Costa Rica. And, as the globe’s largest and most anticipated international deep sea fishing competition, this is a Costa Rica event you will not want to miss.
Beginning 14 years ago and now recognized as one of the world’s most celebrated sportfishing events, the IGFA Offshore World Championship has been held in several world-class destinations including Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and Hawaii. Bonnier Corporation Marine Group, organizers of the tournament, found that Quepos, Costa Rica offered all the essential elements for this acclaimed sportfishing event, including a marina with state-of-the-art facilities, epic offshore fishing, and ample choices for quality accommodations in the area. Quepos has long been renowned as one of Costa Rica’s fishing Meccas, where anglers can pull in tuna, wahoo, roosterfish, cubera snapper, mahi mahi and billfish just about any month of the year.
Spotlighting the world’s best anglers, battling their way through more than 120 qualifying events to enter the competition, Costa Rica’s Offshore World Championship has attracted international media coverage and is leading tournament coordinators to expect record numbers at the 2014 competition. With the 2013 Offshore World Championship tournament hosting 65 teams, from all around the globe, this year’s numbers are still unclear. Last year’s tournament was record setting with 300+ participants, who caught and released 821 billfish, including 811 sailfish and 10 marlin.
